Senior New Year Resolutions that Need to be Kept
A new year means new possibilities for all of us, and that includes those living in senior living communities too. Especially after a year that has been particularly challenging for all of us, it’s even more important that we make New Year’s resolutions to start the new year off on a positive note.
All of us can benefit from making goals to reach during the year. Setting goals and working toward those goals is stimulating for the mind and body. This is important for helping seniors maintain their health. What kinds of resolutions should independent and assisted living senior residents make? Here are three New Year’s resolution ideas for senior living.
1) Stay Active or Become More Active
At senior living communities, especially here at Yuma Senior Living, we have so many opportunities for our residents to partake in physical activities, no matter what their care level is. We tailor these activities to each resident and make sure nothing is too strenuous. We make sure these activities aren’t just fitness activities but social, cultural and recreational too.
If you’re already participating in these events, make your resolution to attend even more. If you are not already participating, make your resolution to begin. Spending less time in your apartment and more time being active encourages healthy aging and helps reduce isolation and depression.
2) Socialize More
Whether it’s with those who also live in your assisted living community or with your family and grandchildren, try to socialize more. Ask your family to come with you to one of the social events happening in your community. Ask your neighbor to join you for dinner at our restaurant-style dining. If you can’t see each other in person, try to schedule video calls.
Getting active can help you socialize more, but make socialization a resolution itself, as it will make you feel even more connected to others. Plus, it will give you someone to attend all those new social events with. You are never too old to make new friends – in fact, it can make all the difference in your quality of life.
3) Eat Healthier
This is a common New Year’s resolution whatever your age may be. But especially for seniors, eating healthier can help decrease the risk of high blood pressure, arthritis, diabetes, and other chronic conditions. Make it a resolution to eat more lean proteins, leafy greens, fresh fruits, and vegetables each day. Also, snacking on dark berries and nuts can help to keep your brain healthy too. Don’t keep yourself from enjoying foods you love, but try to make an effort to eat more of those mentioned above.
