Memory care can be a new territory, uncertain, and a bit scary when it comes to supporting our loved ones. Seniors in dementia care at Yuma Senior Living receive the same quality of care as our seniors in assisted living but with added safety precautions to help the seniors who need dementia or Alzheimer’s care.
Memory care at Yuma Senior Living strives to improve quality of life while maintaining high standards of safety, comfort, and care. Nurses and caregivers have received training not only to assist seniors in memory care but to understand how dementia affects the mind. This allows nurses and caregivers to provide emotional care in addition to medication management, assistance with hygiene, and any other support residents need.
What is Memory Care?
Dementia isn’t a disease of the mind but a condition of impaired brain function that interferes with daily life because of the loss of memory and judgement. Forgetfulness is not uncommon, but when this forgetfulness interferes with an individual’s safety, such as frequently forgetting to turn the stove-top off after cooking, it may be due to dementia.
Alzheimer’s, however, is classified as a disease. According to Stanfield’s Essential Medical Terminology, “It is progressive mental deterioration in middle of old age, due to generalized degeneration of the brain. It is the most common cause of premature senility.”
Many individuals can live independent lifestyle in the beginning stages of dementia, but as dementia becomes a safety issue, trained nurses and caregivers will need to help to ensure safety, comfort, and enjoyment in the everyday life.
How We Can Help
Our goal is to meet the social, recreational, and cultural needs of every one of our residents, even the most active seniors. We are committed to providing the highest quality of life for every resident and to make a difference in the long-term with the same level of care we would provide for own parents or loved ones. Our personal experience and values drive us to provide the best care possible for our residents.
Our caregivers take that time to learn each resident’s personal history, making comfortable relationships easier and opening more opportunities for conversation and connection. Our residents are encouraged to bring their favorite belongings, so they feel comfortable and familiar with their new home. This helps residents remain calmer when they’re experiencing confusing moments.
Our Yuma team has been trained to use validation techniques to help residents needing dementia care accept their reality while feeling safe and comfortable in the caring environment we strive to establish.
Alzheimer’s disease and dementia care require special training to provide the best treatment for our residents. Caregivers take courses to help educate them on how dementia and Alzheimer’s disease affects the mind and how memory loss can progress. Our caregivers can provide emotional support as well as physical support when our dementia care residents experience confusing moments. We’re proud to be able to provide such a great environment and have our residents know how much we care.

Financial Assistance
Having a loved one suffering from dementia or Alzheimer’s disease is challenging. They need more assistance on a daily basis, and that takes an emotional toll on everyone. While those in the early stages of memory loss can still live safely independently, there will come a time when more care is needed, and for many, that means hiring help, which can be stressful and expensive. We provide financial options to help cover costs. We believe everyone deserves the best care, and financial assistance for those in need of memory care. At Yuma Senior Living we accept ALTCS (Arizona Long Term Care System) reimburse for residents who qualify. We also work directly with residents and/or their family members so that they understand all the financial options available to them.
