In anticipation of Yuma’s Annual Rodeo competition and celebration, Yuma seniors will have a great opportunity to attend live rodeo events and see world class rodeo athletes. This year marks the 80th anniversary of Yuma’s Silver Spur Rodeo taking place over three days on February 7th, 8th and 9th. What many seniors might not know is that there is a senior citizen rodeo circuit for those seniors who are rodeo athletes.
Many rodeo organizations and associations include events specifically for senior competitors. These circuits allow older cowboys and cowgirls to showcase their skills in various rodeo events like team roping, barrel racing, breakaway roping, and more.
Examples of Senior Rodeo Organizations:
Senior Pro Rodeo Association (SPRA):
A prominent organization catering to rodeo athletes aged 40 and older, the SPRA organizes events across the United States. Participants compete in traditional rodeo events while maintaining a competitive yet friendly atmosphere.
National Senior Pro Rodeo Association (NSPRA):
Similar to the SPRA, the NSPRA is dedicated to promoting rodeo for senior athletes. It includes various age categories, allowing for fair competition among different senior age groups (e.g., 40+, 50+, 60+ divisions).
Local and Regional Senior Rodeos:
Many regional rodeo circuits and state fairs include senior events as part of their broader rodeo schedules. These events often welcome amateur and seasoned senior competitors.
Popular Events for Seniors:
Team roping
Barrel racing
Tie-down roping
Breakaway roping
Steer wrestling (less common but still available)
These circuits provide a way for senior athletes to stay active, competitive, and engaged in the rodeo community.
All of us at Yuma Senior Living are excited to see many of you at this year’s Silver Spur Rodeo event - events details can be found at www.yumarodeo.com.
