Hydration

Yuma has the unique distinction of being the sunniest place on earth. But during our summer months, extremely high temperatures combined with low humidity can spell trouble for seniors not drinking enough water. Daily hydration is extremely important for seniors, as they are at a higher risk for dehydration due to several factors, such as decreased thirst sensation, changes in kidney function, and certain medications. Dehydration can lead to a variety of negative health outcomes, including fatigue, confusion, dizziness, constipation, urinary tract infections, and even hospitalization.

Seniors should aim to drink at least 8 cups (64 ounces) of fluid per day, but this amount may vary depending on their age, weight, activity level, and overall health. It's also important for seniors to choose hydrating fluids that are low in sugar, caffeine, and alcohol, as these substances can actually increase dehydration.

In addition to drinking enough fluids, seniors can also increase their hydration by consuming water-rich foods such as fruits and vegetables. Overall, staying well-hydrated is essential for seniors to maintain good health and prevent dehydration-related health problems.

At Yuma Senior Living our residents are given daily reminders of how important it is to stay hydrated during the summer months. In addition, as a member of our community, residents will enjoy additional benefits such as nutritious chef-created meals to nourish their bodies, engaging wellness activities, as well as assistance with daily tasks. Simply give us a call at (928) 388-6858, and our Community Ambassador will schedule an onsite tour at your convenience.
